Maine-based singer-songwriter and acoustic guitarist Rob Cunningham brings a warm and honest touch to his latest EP, Carrownisky Strand. The music and stories flow, the project is personal, but not intrusive, and it’s a mix of folk, Americana and roots rock.
Cunningham’s songwriting is one of the best attributes of the EP. His music is thoughtful, stemming from his life, his relationships, his family lessons and a sense of social justice. The impression is here that these are experiences that have genuinely happened rather than just put on paper for the sake of the story.
The EP starts with the reflective “Sometimes I Wonder”, which puts an emotional tone on the piece from the get-go. The vocal rendition appears to be heartfelt, and the strings contribute warmth and make the song even more soulful. “That’s No Way To Treat A Lady” adds another interesting angle to the project, but doesn’t detract from the laid back vibe of the EP.
Another great one, and a favorite of mine, is “Jeannie Says” and its soulful writing and performance. Cunningham doesn’t need to bring in the big guns to make a statement. Rather, the acoustic undercurrent, melodies and narrative are at the heart.
Carrownisky Strand is a quiet, serious set of songs which demonstrate Cunningham’s ability to transform aspects of everyday life and his personal thoughts into songs that are authentic, approachable and accessible.
