Blue Garden” is a five-track children’s album written by Despina, with vocals by Benni Benno. The album follows the changing moods and rhythms of a child’s day, moving from the first light of morning to the quiet of bedtime. Inspired by Despina’s work with children in Switzerland, California and Connecticut, the project combines playful ideas with detailed orchestral and jazz arrangements.
The first song, “All of My Colors,” establishes a quiet and reflective mood. Its beautiful background music is set to the piano, flute and cello which are more detailed than usual children’s music. The atmosphere is relaxed and Benni Benno’s vocals add a cosiness and a friendly approach.
“Bye Bye Moon (Good Morning Sun)” is more of an upbeat song, incorporating fun breathing techniques as if they were part of the morning. Then there’s the title track “Blue Garden” with a little more movement. The piano part slowly fades out and is replaced by a gentle jazz rhythm and lively brass, adding warmth and vibrancy to the music. The arrangement provides a nice background for Benni Benno’s velvety vocals.
“Children of the Sun” carries on the day-time theme, and “Like a River of Light (Lullaby Song)” wraps it all up nicely.
The album’s diverse instrumentation and pacing are enhanced by its production and arrangement, which were handled by Spiros Exaras. There is a character in each song, and they also flow naturally when performed one after the other.
“Blue Garden” is more than a series of kids’ songs. It brings up a little music utopia, unfolding throughout the day in the various moments of the child’s life, but with enough detail for both kids and adults.
