Ma-Isheeba Serves Pure Vibes with “Dutch Pot”

Ma-Isheeba’s new track “Dutch Pot” is a powerful and tasty mix of reggae, funk, dancehall and afrobeat. The legendary singer (who was previously called Chyna Whyne) showcases her talent as an artist that is singular, eternal and vibrant once again.

The basslines, the groove and the undeniable Jamaican feel all grab the listener’s attention right from the start. “Dutch Pot” opens warm and vibrant from the opening beat, as if the song is designed to be played slowly. The reggae/funk base creates a strong sense of identity and dancehall and afrobeat elements ensure the rhythm flows naturally.

The title also has a meaning, and the song has a lot more depth. Slow cooking is a hallmark of a Dutch Pot and so is Ma-Isheeba’s music. This track was written a long time ago in the old 90’s, but this was not rushed, it was given time to develop and grow. This makes for a refined, multi-layered, very satisfying song.

Ma-Isheeba’s vocals are outstanding throughout the song. Her voice flows in and out of soulful, playful and confident sounds. In one instant she is soothing and comforting, in another, vibrant and courageous. Her versatility as a singer draws the listener into the song from start to finish.

Another big feather in the hat of the veteran producer Mike McEvoy is the production. He has collaborated with artists such as Soul II Soul, Steve Winwood and Mark Morrison and has a fresh and innovative style on this record. The transitions are particularly impressive, especially the atmospheric one just before the second verse which brings a subtle Afro-futuristic feeling throughout the song without sacrificing its organic warmth.

The best part of “Dutch Pot” is how alive it is. Not trying to impress at all, but instead taking its time to get its groove going and its mood established, letting each element breathe. As the song ends, the audience is still craving more.

In all, “Dutch Pot” is a stunningly made reggae-funk fusion, a celebration of rhythm, culture and musical forbearance. Refreshing and memorable is Ma-Isheeba’s return, and so is the great music it has to offer that never fails to be worth the wait.
