Love can do amazing things, but the blithely quirky ‘Vampire Girl in Love’ by Andrei British has a certain supernatural romance on the dancefloor. Rather than going with the traditional gritty and grim narrative of vampire tales, he provides us with a self-assured, in-love vampire girl who’s not afraid to seek out what she wants.
The track has a lively arrangement and a vintage musical feel, inspired by the sounds and ambiance of the 1940s and 1950s jazz clubs. The boogie-woogie piano adds a great sense of motion, and the expressive saxophone, electric guitar and swinging drums add a lot of personality to the show. Beautiful melodic variations throughout, which make this arrangement of the song so exciting and have that theatrical quality that makes it so fun to listen to. Has an old school feel that is refreshing, particularly in the way it tells its story.
The lyrics are even more interesting because of the perspective on them. Our vampire girl is very attracted to a human being and wants to conquer his heart. But there’s a very sweet message about love and sacrifice under all the flirting and playful seduction. She would not insist that she share the eternity of her lover’s soul with him, even if he could be made immortal. It’s a sweet twist, making the song more emotional than it might seem at first blush, given the comedic premise.
Andrei British has created a sweet way to take the old and the new, combining vintage jazz with imagination and a story. Even a creature of the night can have a wonderfully human heart – ‘Vampire Girl in Love’ is romantic, entertaining and full of character.
