London-based producer Don Cicci layers a unique blend of hip-hop rhythm and Italian flair into his instrumental track, “Polpette.” It is a romantic Italian boom bap with the raw edge of boom bap and the warm melodies that evoke a sense of nostalgia.
The drums start slowly and relaxed, providing a solid foundation for the song, while the bassline is smooth and adds to the laid-back feel. Then, as they start to enter the scene, the sounds become delicate, like those of a mandolin, giving an instant Italian flavor. The selection of sounds adds a film-like atmosphere, as if from an old European movie.
Enhancing the production as it goes, subtle guitar chords add more warmth and drive the production in a chillhop direction. The subtle metallic tones recall a kalimba, but are not so prominent, thus avoiding crowding the arrangement. Each detail is given ample space to breathe, so that the beat and melodies flow harmoniously.
Don Cicci’s sampling and programming is very meticulous. The track has a romantic, reflective and a bit mysterious quality, while maintaining a street gritty feel to it.
“Polpette” is vintage and modern, inspired by the Italian compositional style of the ’70s which is prevalent in much of Don Cicci’s work. A well-executed boom bap session and a distinctive Euro soul.
