“Don’t Wanna Lose This” has a pretty late night vibe to it, where the darker Melodic Techno sound and the melodic elements of Progressive House and Trance are in perfect balance. Ronald Hage takes his time with this production, lets the track evolve naturally without having to resort to dramatic drops to maintain the momentum
The opening instantly sets the mood with a funky beat and an electron texture. There’s a hard, mechanical feeling that’s there beneath the more melodic parts, as though there’s an acidy layer that’s a little harsh. This darker base pairs nicely with the more open synths above, and gives a nice contrast throughout the song.
The vocal brings an additional layer to the song. It is raspy and melodic with an introspective quality as though the singer never existed in the production. The delivery doesn’t dominate the instrumental, allowing space for the electronic sounds to stay in the heart of the performance.
The kick and low end pulse sustain a sense of movement as the track progresses and shimmering synths and melodic lines slowly creep in. The lead synth really stands out, almost like another voice singing with a melody that lingers in your mind.
Patience is one of the best aspects of the show. Hage’s technique is to build up the tension bit by bit until the track reaches a grand climax of sweeping. The slow build-up makes “Don’t Wanna Lose This” suitable for late night dancefloors as well as sitting with through headphones.
A good balance between atmosphere, energy and melody here, and a polished electronic sound but not losing its dark side.
