CoolhandTrew Blends Feel-Good Grooves and Honest Emotions on ‘Shock The World II’

CoolhandTrew is a hip-hop soul artist based in Virginia, and his new EP, Shock The World II, is a five-track EP that juxtaposes cool grooves with the introspection of late night thinking and the storytelling, all produced by longtime collaborator Toddfromdaspot. The project combines hip-hop, soothing vocals, and layered instrumentals, resulting in an easygoing and emotionally charged vibe.

The EP starts with “Next to Me” which features glinting percussion, floating keys and a soft but noticeable bassline. The lyrics of longing and hesitation are honest thanks to Trew’s gruff, breathy rap delivery. A lovely smooth male hook, and the rich female backing vocals make this one of the EP’s finest moments.

“Can’t Figure You Out” brings a more upbeat energy, with lively drums giving the track a catchy rhythm. They sing the melody nicely and back up nicely, which really brings this song to life beyond the instrumental, and makes the whole arrangement really cool. On “Bundle Up,” the vibe is more relaxed and listeners are asked to take a moment and savor the more peaceful moments in life.

“Shock The World” is the title track, which is heavier. In its dense, bass-driven rhythm and punchy beats, Trew has ample opportunity to sing with pride and gravitas – yet still be charming and thoughtful. The EP concludes with ‘Make Me Feel (Nobody Else)’, a blend of rough-edged vocals from Trew, a soulful female chorus and cinematic orchestral textures. The setup appears more spacious and dramatic, fittingly ending the project.

“Shock The World II” demonstrates CoolhandTrew’s knack for playing accessible rhythms and expressing emotion. The EP is a pleasant blend of soulful melodies, catchy moments and grooves across its five tracks, and definitely something to pause and ponder.
