Scarlett Fagan is a Bristol UK soul singer whose voice was shaped by Etta James, Amy Winehouse, and a parents’ record collection stacked with old soul, Motown, and reggae – and whose new 7″, made with NYC underground production heavyweight Tom Emerald AKA Endemic, is exactly the collision those influences suggest. “Awaken” b/w “Arise,” the debut release on Unique Soul Records, is a horn- and organ-laced break-beat production with a singer who knows how to make a song feel like it costs something, distributed globally by Fat Beats and One Nation in the UK on 7″ vinyl. Endemic Emerald built his name producing for Wu-Tang Clan affiliates, Boot Camp Clik, Roc Marciano, Tragedy Khadafi, Planet Asia, and Ruste Juxx – the first UK hip hop artist to sign to DuckDown Records – and his ear for soulful, break-driven production made him the right architect for Fagan’s voice.
