At times, a song can assume a completely different character once it’s in the hands of another producer. The concept behind Amana Melome’s “RECALIBRATED: THE REMIXES” is to breathe new life into her first album “RECALIBRATION”, using a different production style for each remix. The soul, jazz, dub reggae, funk, disco, and house influences are brought together, making her journey of personal growth dance floor-friendly.

“SO DONE,” by Cee Elassaad and Joel Holmes, the pianist, is a strong first statement. Placing limiting beliefs aside is the message it carries, which dovetails with the confidence of the project. Another notable aspect of the different versions of “Con C.ALMA” is that Somos Animales and Eli Anai each provide the song with a new rhythmic twist. Meanwhile, “Recalibration” receives three interpretations from Opolopo, GodBlessComputers and Saverio ‘Sage’ Principini, showing just how differently the same material can be approached.

One of the more poignant moments comes with “Space Age Mama Jama Recalibrated.” The song was the first Melome‘ ever recorded and is back with the involvement of Deron Johnson and Principini. It’s a bit like going back to an early recording and hearing it again after having matured, both personally and musically, and this version is a wonderful addition to her tale.

The variety of the album is what makes it interesting. From danceable house grooves to reggae influence, funky and jazz inspired arrangements, it’s all there without giving up the quality of the original songs.

“RECALIBRATED: THE REMIXES” isn’t just an updated set of recordings, it’s a whole new experience. It is celebrating who you are, it’s all about transformation and believing in yourself and getting ready to move forward. Amana Melome’ delivers it through vibrant, expressive and energetic music.
