Tha Come Down” is the fourth release from nchanté, an R&B fusion ensemble from writer and producer Jenson Joseph-Ingham, out now on all major streaming platforms. The single is about surrendering completely to a relationship that lifts you, like a drug you never want to ‘come down’ from.
Inspired by a decade-old beat, “Tha Come Down” moves on a dry, dragging bassline and a pulsing melody. It provokes imagery of levitation, flying through the air like you were in a lucid dream. A spoken-word breakdown nods to the pixie dust of Peter Pan. It’s a celebration of the magic in finding someone who sees you, loves you, and elevates your life.
Joseph-Ingham crafted 100% of the lyrics. His process isn’t simply putting lyrics in a generator and praying, which is a recipe for slop. The melody, arrangement and bassline were all human crafted. This generation gave some trouble sticking to the intended flow. The rhythm was never perfect. Key elements got dropped from the performance. The voice would miss the mark. Rather than go with the nearest match, Joseph-Ingham pieced the final version together from parts of different versions, including the takes that carried the feel he was after. The result was then mixed and mastered by his nephew at Wizzard House Studios, who has handled every nchanté release.
The lyrics came one particular night. Joseph-Ingham wrote the words in bed next to his wife in the aftermath of an argument. The next day, while assembling the track, she stopped him.
“How can someone be so mean and also make such beautiful music.” she asked.
“I took her exaggeration as an apology,” says Joseph-Ingham, “but it did manage to put a smile on my face.”
